Ladan Manteghi, President, Global AARP Networks

Ladan Manteghi provides executive leadership for the AARP Global Network (AGN). She brings to the position nearly 20 years of combined public, private and nonprofit sector experience in international relations, policy, communications, program management and advocacy.

Ms. Manteghi’s professional background includes leading AARP’s global initiatives first as director of AARP’s Office of International Affairs, where she helped create the Global Aging Program forging policy dialogues and alliances with leaders in government, business, media and other organizations serving older populations. She also collaborated and created partnerships with influential groups such as World Economic Forum, Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, and the European Commission. Prior to her role at AARP, she provided consultancy services to a non-profit focused on addressing the digital divide, and directed outreach activities and advocacy campaigns for multi-national corporations and national nonprofits.

Ms. Manteghi has also served as a consultant to nonprofits and for-profits, established as well as start-ups. She has also worked for the previous President and Vice President of the United States, the US Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Interior, working with various stakeholder groups including foreign, state, and local governments. Ms. Manteghi earned a B.A. in Political Science/Public Service from the University of California at Davis..

Carole A. Anderson, EdD, is Vice President of Education for the American Society on Aging. She leads program and business development at the Society. The American Society on Aging is a membership organization of professionals serving the field of aging. Its mission is to enhance the knowledge and skills of those who seek to improve the quality of life of older adults and their families. Areas of focus are unleashing new opportunities for products and programs geared to older adults, aging in community, care giving and care transitions, retirement planning & financial well being, and healthy aging

 

Ravi Belani
Draper Fisher Jurvetson

Ravi Belani is an Associate and Kauffman Fellow at Draper Fisher Jurvetson. Ravi brings experiences with new ventures and established firms to his role. Prior to Draper Fisher Jurvetson, Ravi worked in product management at software startup Zaplet (acquired by MetricStream). Ravi has also worked in product management at enterprise software company Extensity (IPO’d then acquired by GEAC) as a Mayfield Fellow. As a management consultant at McKinsey and Company’s San Francisco office, Ravi worked with Fortune 500 hi tech and biotech companies on a range of strategic issues, including market attractiveness assessments, pricing, channel strategy, and new product development processes. He has also worked at Medtronic on wireless communication technologies for remote patient monitoring and in equity research at Bridgewater Associates.

Ravi is a Phi Beta Kappa and Tau Beta Pi graduate of Stanford University, holding a BS with Distinction and MS in Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management. Ravi also holds an MBA from Harvard Business School. As a Board Fellow at Harvard, Ravi served the Global Board of TiE (The Indus Entrepreneurs).

Jay DeCoons

Jay is a Senior Associate in Highland’s Menlo Park office, focusing on investments in technology and healthcare.

Prior to joining Highland, Jay worked at The MENTOR Network, a behaviorial health company, where he assisted senior management on the financing and implementation of a series of acquisitions to greatly expand the company’s revenue and customer base. He began his career at Summit Partners, a private equity and venture capital firm investing in growth stage companies, where he concentrated his investment activity within the healthcare services, business services and technology industries. Jay has also worked in the corporate strategy group at Medtronic, a world leader in medical technology, where he focused on wireless communication technologies for remote patient monitoring.

Jay received a BBA in Finance from the University of Notre Dame and an M.B.A. from Harvard School of Business.

He enjoys road cycling, snowboarding, college sports and recently competed in the Ironman Switzerland Triathalon.

Andy Donner

Mr. Donner has ten years of experience in the financial services, healthcare, and information technology industries. Mr. Donner was previously a Senior Associate with Great Spirit Ventures, an early-stage venture capital fund, where he focused on consumer healthcare investments. Mr. Donner led Great Spirit Ventures’ investment in Attune Foods, Corazonas Foods, LightFull Foods, and The Natural Dentist, where he currently serves on the board.

Prior to joining Great Spirit Ventures, Mr. Donner spent six years founding, building, and managing rapid-growth companies in the high-tech industry, including atMadison.com, where he served as Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer; Entopia, where he established and directed the product marketing department; and LeapFrog Enterprises, where he developed new business opportunities in the healthcare industry. From 1997 to 1999, Mr. Donner was a member of Wasserstein Perella’s Technology Mergers & Acquisitions Group, where he provided transaction execution and advisory services to enterprise software, hardware, and Internet companies. He began his career working for VISTA, the “domestic Peace Corps,” where his leadership of a state-wide public health program was honored at the Presidential Summit for America’s Future.

Mr. Donner graduated cum laude from Duke University’s pre-med program and earned his MBA at the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley, where he was awarded full-tuition as a Haas Merit Scholar. While earning his MBA, Mr. Donner served as a Graduate Student Instructor for one of the school’s leading entrepreneurship courses and was elected President of the Berkeley chapter of Net Impact, an international organization of business school students committed to social responsibility and environment stewardship.

With more than 20 years of experience, Mary Furlong is an expert in boomers and seniors. In 1985, Mary started SeniorNet and in 1996, she founded ThirdAge Media. She has raised over $110 million in venture capital and sponsorships. She founded Mary Furlong & Associates in 2003. She co-produces the annual What’s Next Boomer Business Summit, Silicon Valley Boomer Venture Summit and Boomer Business Plan Competition, publishes the “Boomer/Senior Market Report” and serves the marketing, strategy, public relations and financing needs of her private client practice. Her client list includes: Shaklee, Posit Science, AARP, Microsoft, Pfizer, ASA, NCOA, and Quantum Intech, Inc. Her newest book, Turning Silver into Gold, How to Profit in the New Boomer Marketplace, Prentice Hall, was published in Spring, 2007. Charles Hirschhorn

Charles Hirschhorn, chief creative officer for Retirement Living TV (RLTV), brings a wealth of entertainment experience to the network. With more than 20 years in film production, television, cable, broadband, animation and video games, Hirschhorn's vision and ability to anticipate winning consumer entertainment trends have shaped and defined many of the industry's hottest properties.

Hirschhorn conceived G4 Television, the original and only 24/7 television network dedicated to video games in the year 2000. While serving as CEO from 2000 to 2005, he developed the original business model, secured $150 million in financing and oversaw the channel's launch in 2002, with 12 originally-produced series. During his tenure, Hirschhorn managed the $300 million acquisition and integration of TechTV. Prior to creating G4 Television, Hirschhorn spent 10 years at The Walt Disney Company in various management roles including motion pictures, television and animation. As executive vice president, he managed the development and production of over 20 films, including the critically acclaimed "The Joy Luck Club" and "Quiz Show", as well as the highly successful family favorite "The Santa Clause."

He re-launched "The Wonderful World of Disney" on ABC in 1997 and oversaw all live-action films airing on the program as well as all animated television series and theatricals for ABC, Disney Channel, Disney Video Premieres and Movietoons. He also served as executive vice president of production for the Walt Disney Motion Pictures Group. Before joining Disney, Hirschhorn was vice president of development for Fox Broadcasting, helping to launch the Fox Network and managing the network's primetime programming. He personally developed the Emmy® award-winning series "In Living Color."

In addition, Hirschhorn is the founder of Fountain Productions, an independent production company where his credits include associate producer on the film "Bull Durham," and executive producer on "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels," "The Miracle Worker," "Inspector Gadget II," and "Herbie: Fully Loaded," which were all distributed by Walt Disney Pictures.

Hirschhorn earned his bachelor's degree from Harvard and served as an Arts Management Fellow for the National Endowment for the Arts. He also serves on the boards of Berklee College of Music and Harvard College Office of the Arts.


Nancy Kamei

Nancy Kamei manages minority equity investments in healthcare for Intel Capital. This includes healthcare information technology, personal health systems, and biomedical/life sciences. Prior to joining Intel Capital, she was an analyst/portfolio manager at Capital Group Companies (“Cap Guardian”) responsible for investments in health care services and facilities, healthcare information technology, biotechnology and consumer products. Prior to Capital, she was an Entrepreneur-in-Residence at Institutional Venture Partners and a serial entrepreneur, having been on the start-up teams of four successful biotechnology companies: Onyx Pharmaceuticals (ONXX), Tularik (TLRK), GlycoGen (sold to Cytel/CYTL), and ImmuLogic (IMUL). She started her career as a National Pharmaceutical Council Fellow, then managed a sales territory for Merck and Company. Nancy has an MBA from Stanford and a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of California, San Francisco. She is an Assistant Clinical Professor at UCSF and also serves on the Board of Advisors for the UCSF School of Pharmacy.

Nathan McLemore serves as Director of Business Development for Microsoft's Health Solutions Group, where he is responsible for advancing the company's growing health solutions business through partnerships, acquisitions, and other strategic development activities. Mr. McLemore brings more than 14 years experience in the health and technology industries to Microsoft.

Most recently, he was Vice President of Business Development for RelayHealth Corporation, a leader in online, doctor-patient communication which was acquired by McKesson Corporation (NYSE: MCK). Prior to RelayHealth, he was Director of Business Development for eScript Corporation, a pioneer in the electronic prescribing. He served as Director of Federal Affairs for CFM, a boutique public affairs firm, where he represented health system and technology companies before Congress and Executive Branch Agencies.

Ajit Medhekar

.Ajit Medhekar, founder, chairman and CEO of Lara Technology and empowerTel Networks, joined ARCH in January 2007 as a Venture Partner focused on investments in the physical sciences, including semiconductors, communications, optics and advanced materials. He is a
director of Shocking Technologies, MediaPhy and MobileVerbs.

Mr. Medhekar brings a long history of technical expertise and entrepreneurial success in launching, developing and investing in high technology companies across multiple industries. Throughout his career, he has worked in advanced technologies addressing semiconductor design and fabrication, and communications. In 1997 he founded Lara Technology which developed high speed silicon search-engines and was acquired by Cypress Semiconductor in mid-2001. In 2000, he founded empowerTel Networks, a VoIP company that was acquired two years later by IP Unity. Mr. Medhekar joined the Board of Directors of IP Unity following the
acquisition.

He started his technical career at National Semiconductor and Synertek before joining Monolithic Memories, Inc., where he successfully decreased time to market for new products from 3 to 1.5 years, until the company was acquired by Advanced Micro Devices. He then joined Alliance Semiconductor and helped shape the company as its Vice President of Memory Products from a start-up to a successful public offering in 1993.

Mr. Medhekar has been actively engaged in advising and mentoring entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley and has been an active angel investor in over 40 technology start-ups. He is currently a member of the Band of Angels and a Charter Member of TiE Silicon Valley. He has served on the boards of several technology companies and has co-authored over thirteen patents. Mr. Medhekar received his SM and SB degrees in Electrical Engineering from MIT in 1980.

Scott joined JJDC in 2007 and currently focuses on medical device investments in all therapeutic areas. He works out of the Mountain View office.

Prior to joining JJDC, Scott worked for a private equity firm in Southern California where he evaluated investments across all areas of healthcare. Before that he was a consultant in the healthcare practice of L.E.K. Consulting. While there he provided strategic advice to medical device, biotechnology and private equity firms. His professional career began as a healthcare investment banking analyst with Merrill Lynch where he worked on both M&A and equity financings.

Scott received his Ph.D. in Bioengineering jointly from the University of California, Berkeley and the University of California, San Francisco. His thesis was on the material properties of left ventricular aneurysm and the development of computational methods to better understand heart failure. He completed his B.S. in Bioengineering at the University of California, San Diego.

Nathan Scott Oliver is a partner in the Litigation department of the Palo Alto office. Mr. Oliver specializes in the litigation and trial of patent, copyright, and complex technology-related cases in state and federal courts, as well as before the International Trade Commission. Prior to joining Morrison & Foerster, Mr. Oliver was a partner at Pooley & Oliver and at Gray Cary Ware & Freidenrich, specializing in intellectual property litigation.

Mr. Oliver's litigation practice has focused on a wide range of technologies, such as the digital distribution of content (including involvement in both the Napster and MP3.com cases), patents related to telecommunications switching, video-on-demand systems, host software processing modems, hard disc drive motor technology, video gaming software, optical networking, flash memory products, and software for rendering typefaces on a computer screen or printer. He has extensive experience in developing and managing major anti-piracy programs for clients such as leading golf club manufacturers and software publishers. Mr. Oliver also has considerable expertise in patent, trademark, and copyright licensing issues, and is frequently involved in the drafting and review of complex licensing agreements. He has additional expertise in the counseling and litigation of matters under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act ("DMCA").

Mr. Oliver received his A.B., cum laude, in English and American Literature from Harvard University, and his J.D., magna cum laude, from the University of San Diego, where he was Lead Articles Editor for the Law Review and named to the Order of the Coif. In 1996, Mr. Oliver was recognized by The Board of Governors of the State Bar of California and was presented with The Wiley W. Manuel Award for Pro Bono Legal Services. He is the Vice-Chair of the American Intellectual Property Law Association's ITC Committee, a member of the bar of California, and admitted to practice before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.

Emilio is a senior executive with over 17 years of development and management experience with non-profit, corporate and governmental organizations. As Chief Brand Officer, he is currently responsible for all creating, coordinating and integrating brand–related plans from across the enterprise. Prior to his new appointment, he was the Senior Vice President, Business Development at AARP Services. At AARP Services, he was responsible for all product development, product licensing, new market channel development, and joint ventures for AARP Services, Inc. He also managed all strategic alliances and corporate partnerships efforts for AARP, which included working with organizations like The Home Depot, United Health Care, The Hartford Group, Proctor & Gamble and Travelocity. Most recently, he served as one of the senior executives for Discovery Communications, Inc., where he was responsible for special projects and development spanning of all 14 broadcast networks, including Discovery Health Channel, Discovery Channel, Travel Channel, Animal Planet, TLC, and FitTV.

 

Samer Salameh

Founder and CEO, Samer Salameh, started Livtopia in 2005 to be the chief source of information on real estate and relocating to Mexico and other countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. Best known for having rescued Prodigy Communications from bankruptcy and obscurity, Samer successfully led a turnaround of the company that had lost over $1.4 Billion over the previous twelve years. He grew Internet revenues from $17 M to $400 M in just two years, and completed the largest internet IPO ever in February of 1999 for $168 M. After negotiating and integrating three acquisitions, he eventually sold the company to AT&T in a deal valued at over $2 Billion.

Steve has been with the Council on Aging for 24 years and has grown the agency from a 5 person/1.2 million dollar to a 80 person/12.2 million dollar agency, the largest agency that serves seniors and their caregivers with aging-in-place. Prior to that Steve spent 5 years as Deputy Director of Onlok Senior Health Services. Steve is a recognized thought leader and entrepreneur in the area of aging, successfully implementing many innovative programs that integrate social services and health care. Steve has also created a unique system of revenue generating programs that will ensure growth in uncertain times for non-profits. Under Steve’s leadership, the agency will be on the forefront of readiness to serve the Baby Boomers as they age. Steve has a Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration, and a Master’s degree in Gerontology from the University of South Florida.

Jan is responsible for the design and implementation of management and leadership development programs at SCU's Executive Development Center. Previously, Jan was Director of Program Development for HandsNet, Inc., where she developed an extensive national program and policy network focused on children, youth and families. For almost 10 years, Jan was Director of Program Services for the YWCA of the USA, New York, NY where she developed national program initiatives focused on leadership, health and wellness, and work/life issues for women and girls in communities nationwide. Prior to this, she was Assistant Professor of Psychology at Lafayette College, Easton, PA. She received an M.S. and Ph.D. in Psychology from Iowa State University where her focus was on Lifespan Developmental Psychology, with an emphasis on adolescence and aging. She received a BA in Mathematics and Psychology from Concordia College.

 

Jon Staenberg

Jon Staenberg has been working with venture backed companies for more than a decade, and has participated in over 100 deals. In this capacity he has started his own company, worked full-time in other companies, and consulted to over 50 startups. He is one of the most experienced venture capitalists in the Pacific Northwest, having raised two funds totaling over $100 million. After working in the marketing area at Microsoft for six years, he joined Virtual i-O as VP of Sales & Marketing. During the last eight years, he has been engaged in business planning, business development, financial planning and fundraising, recruiting and mergers and acquisitions work for a variety of Silicon Valley and Seattle-based startups.

Jon serves on the boards of Class.com and Micropath, and is on the advisory boards of New Vine Logistics, Vista Broadband, Prime Advantage, Time Domain, Atlantes.com, OneName, Syncronex, and uReach.com.

Jon graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Stanford University, where he received his B.S., M.A., and M.B.A. While at Stanford, he started and ran two successful companies.

Jon grew up in Omaha, Nebraska and is a hardcore Nebraska Cornhusker fan. In his spare time he collects sports ticket stubs.

 

Vance Vanier

Dr. Vanier was formerly a partner at MDV-Mohr Davidow Ventures, where he invested in molecular diagnostics, medical devices and online health. In addition, he helped formulate the clinical and commercialization strategies of numerous portfolio companies operating in medical markets.

Dr. Vanier received his medical degree from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, did his residency training at the University of California, San Francisco, and Highland Hospital in Oakland, Calif., and now is on the clinical faculty in the emergency medical division at Stanford Medical Center. He is member of the Personalized Medicine Coalition's Clinical Science Committee and the American College of Preventive Medicine. During his medical career, he has had a strong commitment to international medicine -- including traveling to Kosovo after the war to work with the World Health Organization in creating an ambulance system. He received a master's in business administration from Stanford University, as well as dual bachelor's degrees with honors.

Peter is on the boards of AssistGuide (long term care), PostX (secure email and statementing), and Aspectrics (chemical sensors). Peter enjoys teaching students as a guest lecturer for Stanford's, Wharton's, and Chicago's Business Schools.  He is quoted in industry and business publications, such as USA Today, the Red Herring and the Wall Street Journal.  Peter is a frequent judge for the University of Hawaii Business Plan Competitions.

He is a former Venture Partner of Venture Strategy Partners, a former Managing Director of Lazard, where he founded and ran the investment bank’s early stage advisory business, and a former partner of Cooley Godward. Mr. Zimman earned his AB degree at Bowdoin College and his JD and MBA degrees at Stanford University. His current endeavor, Posit Science Corporation (formerly Neuroscience Solutions Corporation), is developing and testing products that target rejuvenation of a broad range of brain function, including immediate and delayed memory, attention, language, spatial and sensory skills.
